Portugal Strengthens Border Security for Third Country Nationals

Portugal Flag

From May 19, new EU systems will improve border security and processing for third-country nationals for short stay visits, in an effort to modernize Portugal border security and management.

The SSI will begin implement the new system to modernise Schengen border management, coordinated by the European agency EU-LISA.

  • VIS4 | European Visa Information System;
  • PASSE+ | National Air and Land Border Control System
  • Border Portal | Support platform for border operations..

All Third-country nationals (non-EU/Schengen) travelling on short-stay visas are subjected to

  • Mandatory fingerprinting of all third-country nationals with a visa –
  • Increased security and reliability of documents.
  • Greater processing efficiency: Integration of biometric and alphanumeric data enables more accurate processing.

During this transition period, there may be an increase in processing times at passport control checkpoints, especially at international airports.
