UK Rolls Out ETA for St.Kitts Passport Holders

London UK flag

Effective January 8, 2025, all travellers from visa-exempt countries, including citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis, must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter or transit through the United Kingdom (UK).

What Changed?

Previously, visa-exempt travellers could visit the UK without additional requirements. With the introduction of the ETA, travellers must complete a mandatory digital authorisation process to gain entry. While this requirement does not alter the visa-free status for St. Kitts and Nevis citizens, obtaining an ETA is now a crucial step for travel to the UK.

What You Need to Know

  • The ETA is not a visa; it is a travel authorisation to streamline entry processes and ensure security.
  • St. Kitts and Nevis citizens retain visa-free access to the UK. The ETA simply adds a digital pre-clearance step.

Key Details About the ETA

1. Who Needs an ETA?

  • Citizens of visa-exempt countries visiting the UK for tourismbusinessshort-term studies, or family visits of up to 6 months.
  • Travellers transiting through the UK.

2. How to Apply:

  • Submit applications online via the official UK government website or the UK ETA app, which is available for download on both IOS and Android devices.
  • Requirements: A valid passport, an email address, and a credit or debit card to pay the £10 fee (USD 12.49).

3. Processing Time:

  • Most applications are processed within 3 working days, but travellers are encouraged to apply earlier to avoid delays.

4. Validity and Usage:

  • The ETA is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
  • It allows multiple entries to the UK for stays of up to 6 months each.

Who Does Not Require an ETA?

You are exempt from the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement if any of the following apply to you:

  • You hold a valid visa for the UK.
  • You have permission to live, work, or study in the UK, including:
    • Settled or pre-settled status.
    • Right of abode.
  • You are a British or Irish citizen.
  • You are travelling with a British Overseas Territories citizen passport.
  • You live in Ireland and are travelling from IrelandGuernseyJersey, or the Isle of Man.

Dual Citizens

If you hold dual citizenship that includes British or Irish citizenship, you do not need an ETA. You can prove your right to travel using one of the following:

  • British passport.
  • An Irish passport.
  • Another passport that includes a certificate of entitlement.

Avoid Confusion with ETIAS (EU)

The ETA system is specific to the UK. It not be confused from the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), which applies to the European Union/Schengen Area. To enter the Europe, the citizens will need to apply for ETIAS separately which is also slated to be implemented mid 2025 or later.
