First version of Malta IIP expires in September

Malta citizenship by investment

The Malta Individual Investor Programme (v1) is reaching its quota limits after almost six years of operation. The Government has sent a notice asking for individuals applying for this citizenship by investment programs before end of september under the current regulations.

The Malta Individual Investor Program Agency (MIIPA) will continue accepting applications for citizenship under the Malta Individual Investor Programme Regulations until the 30th of September 2020.

Applications for residence under this IIP programme will continue to be accepted until the 31st of July 2020. Those individuals who obtain a residence card, but do not manage to submit a citizenship application by the 30th of September 2020, may be considered under new regulations that the Government is considering.

Malta created a economic niche for citizenship by investment, which took this opportunity, in attracting highly qualified persons who bring wealth, opportunity and talent to the economic prosperity of Malta.

The Individual Investor Programme of the Republic of Malta was launched in 2014 under Maltese Citizenship Act (CAP. 188) and the IIP Regulations, 2014 (L.N. 47 of 2014) with an initial quota limit of 1,800 applications.

In 2020, Malta Government decided to relaunch second version of the Individual investor program with new regulations.  The Citizenship has the most stringent multi-tier background checks in the world only highly qualified investors with excellent background are admitted into the program. Almost one in three applications are refused for accountability of source of funds.

Foreigners are required to invest close to €900K and wait for one year, holding residency before being granted citizenship certificate and a maltese passport which comes with full EU citizen rights.

Those who cannot afford citizenship program are welcome to apply for Malta golden visa program which is available for investment in Govt bonds
